Alana contacted me by email to ask what colours I love, the following day she designed and posted my necklace. I was delighted to receive my gorgeous breastfeeding necklace only a few days after my initial contact with Alana. With an adjustable, coloured leather cord, the necklace consists of beautiful glass and acrylic beads and came with a special bag. Mine has a gorgeous, large, sparkly pink bead in the centre, surrounded by a combination of blue and pink beads. The cord is strong and secure. The design is of high quality without any parts that can break or get caught in your hair. I have a two year old son who is still breastfeeding and has always been quite a fidgeter. He has progressed from having a hand in my mouth to pulling my hair, squeezing my nose, pinching my other nipple, kicking his legs around, scratching the chair behind my back and even trying to watch tv while feeding! I have been so relieved to find something that will satisfy his need to fidget yet not cause me any discomfort. He will simply roll the beads in his hand as he feeds and drifts off to sleep - beautiful! I am expecting my second child in the next couple of months and feel that this necklace will come in extremely handy while tandem feeding. But not only is this necklace useful for feed times, I have found it to be a saviour at other times when i need to keep my son quietly distracted. Shellie Drysdale - Yarra Ranges Mothers Matter and Melbourne Mothers Matter - Autum-Winter 2008 Alana Jones turned her passion for jewellery making into a full-time career and launched Sparkling Dragon Designs when she found out she was pregnant with her son Lachlan, who is now nineteen months old. "I really wanted to start the business so I was self-sufficient and could help add to the income in the household," said Alana. Alana started selling commercially when she approached the Ainsworth Estate Winery in Seville about putting her jewellery in their display cabinet. "They actually cleared out the whole cabinet and said ‘Go for your life’, so that’s been excellent," said Alana. Business has really taken off since she expanded into the online realm in mid 2007 by launching her own web site and advertising on bridal sites. "Once I got online, and once I started advertising as well through Bride Online and Easy Weddings, it really grew". Having previously worked at an accounting firm, Alana found it a huge change to adjust to running a business from home and being a mum. She found the greatest challenge was prioritising and finding enough hours in a day. "I make sure that during the day I really sit down and spend time with Lachlan and then also try and get the house chores done and also spend time on developing the business even further," said Alana. Yet it helps to have a plan to get to all of those tasks. "I always write a ‘to do’ list and I always try to cross off at least one thing on that ‘to do’ list during the day, so it’s sometimes just trying not to get too distracted with different things". Another challenge is not having a set income. "It’s not like when you do full time work and you do have a wage coming in all the time, but you just have to budget strictly," said Alana. The rewards of juggling working from home and caring for Lachlan far outweigh the challenges for Alana. "It’s the best of both worlds, it really is, being able to be home with him and doing something I love. And every day I learn something new, be it business or definitely with Lochie," said Alana. She aims to make her jewellery unique and affordable. "In my mind every woman should be able to afford to have a beautiful necklace and I like keeping my prices down". And it’s a huge thrill for her to see someone wearing her creations. "That’s a really proud moment. To see your jewellery being worn is fabulous," said Alana. For other mums considering starting their own business, Alana thinks it’s important to do your research and not to give up when you come across challenges, but you also need to take time out. "Make time for yourself as well when you are doing all this stuff, otherwise you can get lost in it," said Alana. There’s always time in the day for playing games and reading with Lachlan, who ensures he isn’t forgotten about.
